I-11 isn’t only about Avra Valley. According to the UA’s Eller College of Management’s Arizona-Mexico Economic Indicators Annual Report 2019, 337,941 trucks crossed the border from Nogales in 2018. That’s an average of 925 trucks every day, and the number is expected to increase exponentially with the completion of I-11.
It is important to note that no matter where the I-11 route is built, it will depend on I-19 to carry that traffic from Nogales, and will still have to come through Green Valley. In my opinion, the Green Valley Council and our political and civic representatives should be lobbying hard for sound walls and dedicated truck lanes as a truck traffic nightmare is definitely on its way. It may not happen in my lifetime, but we should be concerned about mitigating the danger and quality of life damage to our community right now.
