Twenty-four hours after discovering the vandalism, it’s still difficult to understand why anyone would choose to observe Memorial Day by breaking off all 31 American flags flying from the Elephant Head Bridge and throwing them into the riverbed.

The flags began appearing shortly after 9/11 and have been maintained by volunteers for 18 years, needing to be replaced periodically due to vandalism and wind damage. We can only appreciate those who started the tradition and the volunteers who care for the flags, reminding us what they are all about.
