Mr. Jim Cleary’s letter regarding bike lanes does not reveal that more bike lanes mean increased safety for not only cyclists but also vehicle drivers (“Bike lanes,” June 5).
The lanes provide increased visibility for drivers, less need to swerve around riders and reduced vehicle traffic to deal with, to mention just a few. It is so encouraging to observe the healthy lifestyles of the many cyclists cruising in the Green Valley and Sahuarita communities and safely using dedicated bike lanes.
With help from government and local organizations, bike lane mileage was tripled in a five-year period to the 75 bike lane miles that we now have in the community. Several years ago Green Valley and the eastern portion of Pima County were honored when awarded a gold rating as a bicycle-friendly community by the League of American Bicyclists.
