Donald N. Anderson was born March 23, 1919, in Detroit Lakes, Minnesota, the son of Louise and Lars Anderson. Donald died at home, La Joya Assisted, Green Valley, Arizona on March 21, 2019.
He married Eileen Widenhoefer of Fisher, MN on June 4, 1942. After WWII they spent the majority of their married life in Fargo, ND and then Moorhead, MN. Eileen died December 9, 1984 after a three-year battle with cancer.
Also preceding him in death is daughter Cheryl Johnson (and husband Steve), his parents, brothers, Leonard, Ken and Arthur, and sisters Viola, Edna, Bernice and Jeanette.
Surviving are his daughter Lynn Whyte (David) of Mora, MN, five grandchildren: Laurie (Andy) Grover of Savage, MN; Dean (Heather) Whyte of Long Lake, MN; Diane (Ben) Schumacher of Victoria, MN; Chrissy (Dave) Wolfe of Loveland, CO and Tim Johnson of Sioux Falls, SD and nine great-grandchildren.
He is also survived by wife Phyllis (Evans) Anderson, whom he married January 26, 1990, and her four children: Jason (Carol) Evans of Eufaula, OK; Stan (Donna) Evans of Poway, CA; Janet (Bob) Kinder of Arvada ,CO; and Laurie Johnson of Cedar Hill, TX and four step-grandchildren and three step-great-grandchildren.
Don was an honor graduate and president of his class at Detroit Lakes High School. He achieved similar honors at Moorhead State Teachers College, graduating in 1941. He received his Master of Science Degree in Education from the University of Minnesota and did his doctorate work at the University of Iowa and University of Minnesota. His 30-plus years of military service included WWII, where he served in North Africa, Italy, France and Germany, and the Korean War. He was a graduate of numerous military schools, including the Infantry School, the Command and General Staff College and the Army War College. A recipient of many medals and awards, he retired from the Minnesota Army National Guard as a Brevet Brigadier General, having finished his career as Commandant of the Minnesota Military Academy. His career at Minnesota State University at Moorhead extended from 1941 to 1983, during which time he served in a variety of positions and earned numerous honors as a teacher, coach and administrator.
He was a life member of several professional and military organizations including the National Education Association, the National Guard Association, the Reserve Officers Association, the Minnesota Military Historical Association and the Army War College Alumni Association. Other memberships included B.P.O.E. Lodge # 2592, Minnesota American Legion Post #21 and the Army Historical Society.
He enjoyed traveling in the US and did take one trip back to Europe to visit the areas where he was during the war. He liked to have fun and loved spending time with friends and family. He loved playing golf all his life; his last game was at age 97.
He was a past member of Trinity Lutheran Church of Moorhead, MN and a current member of Desert Hills Lutheran Church of Green Valley, AZ.
