Beth Phillips, 75, passed away peacefully on March 19, 2019, after a long battle with Alzheimer’s. A graduate of the University of Arizona, she was a lifetime educator. Before founding Great Expectations Academy in Sahuarita she taught at the Arizona Asthmatic Foundation, Sahuarita Schools, Santa Cruz Valley Schools and trained hundreds of teachers in the Collaborative Literacy Intervention Project. She loved books and hosted many Young Author’s Days at her various schools.
She loved nature and music, was a docent at the Desert Museum and a member of Sweet Adelines. She was known for calling friends and family to go outside and look at the moon, and her favorite dinner was ice cream. She had regular reunions with friends from the Methodist Youth Fellowship and enjoyed being a member of the Valle Verde Rotary Club.
She is survived by her brother Jim (Nancy), sister Bobbie (Ellis), son Mark (Kandi), 5 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren, 2 nephews, 3 nieces and 5 grandnieces.
A Celebration of Life will be held at on April 27 at noon in the auditorium at Great Expectations Academy, 1466 W. Camino Antigua in Sahuarita.
As a single mother, Beth worked summers to provide instruments for her musician son. A fund has been established in her honor to provide instruments for students and help fulfill her dream that all children have the gift of music in their lives.
