A non-profit for adults with special needs is looking for donations to buy a second van to keep up with growth.
Adventures with Friends was launched in 2019 by Sahuarita resident Penny Grabowski and her son, Tim, who has special needs. The group connects adults with special needs through social activities.
The group uses a van to get to their activities, but when it broke down on the side of the road, Grabowski knew she had to find a replacement.
She recently bought a 2007 van, but with 27 members and just 15 seats, they need a second one.
“Membership is growing,” Grabowski said, “and we’re always looking to connect with other families with special needs.”
Grabowski said they're using word-of-mouth to get donations but fundraisers are possible.
Adventures with Friends has been named as the beneficiary for the 2023 Charity Golf Event hosted by the Green Valley Sahuarita Association of Realtors in November.
Grabowski said if no van is donated by then, the funds will be used to buy one. She expects they will need around $20,000 for a used van.
“It’s just so joyful to ride around in the van with them,” she said. “They’re always singing or laughing and just having fun.”
