Sahuarita High School senior Makayla Hammerquist received a $2,500 P.E.O. STAR scholarship from the Philanthropic Educational Organization (P.E.O.) Sisterhood.

The P.E.O. STAR Scholarship is awarded to exceptional high school senior women to help with postsecondary education in the U.S. or Canada the next academic year.

Women are selected for their leadership, academic standing, extracurricular activities and community service.

Hammerquist was recommended by the P.E.O. Chapter DA of Green Valley for her high GPA and activities.

She is a member of Honor Society, received the "I am SHS" award and is involved with Choir Club and orchestra. She also has played soccer, volleyball, club soccer and became a soccer referee.

Hammerquist also participates in community service with volunteer work at the food bank and involvement with her church youth group. She is known for her maturity and leadership.

Hammerquist will attend the University of Arizona to pursue a degree in nursing.

P.E.O. started in 1869, and has helped more than 116,000 women pursue a college education by providing $383 million in grants, scholarships, awards and loans.
