Remembering the queen’s 1983 visit to Los Angeles

Somebody in the information office of the LAPD recalled there was a former British bobby serving as an officer. The call was made "and I spit-shined literally everything and stood waiting at the foot of a winding staircase," Jones says. 

As she descended the staircase, Mayor Tom Bradley leaned over, whispered to her and pointed in Jones' direction.

"Apparently, he had been told about me. Having read up about protocol, I waited silently until she put her hand out for me to shake. I took her gloved hand and bowed slightly. She then said, 'So, Officer Jones, you were a bobby where?'"

“West Yorkshire, Your Majesty.”

“I bet things are a little different here.” 

“Yes, indeed. There are so many guns here.”

Her parting remark: “Oh, dear. Well, be very careful then.”
