GVR meeting

Hundreds of people packed the East Center last week, many opposed to the Esperanza site.

In a late-hour move Tuesday, Green Valley Recreation's board unanimously decided to rescind the organization's offer on West Esperanza Boulevard that it planned to use for a Pickleball complex.

The board met in executive session for several hours to consider sweeping opposition from several neighborhoods surrounding the vacant 12-acre strip of land in a barrage of letters and comments at a forum last Thursday, according to GVR spokesman Miles Waterbury. The meeting ended after 7 p.m., he said.

A second forum planned for Thursday at the East Social Center has been canceled.

Waterbury said GVR will continue to look for a more suitable spot where noise, lighting, traffic and distance from homes is less of an issue.

The Board also agreed to provide lighting for the three unlit Pickleball courts at East Center to accommodate additional Pickleball play, according to an email blast sent about 11:30 a.m.
