Despite being warned by his bank and store clerks, a Green Valley man lost $5,500 over the last week in a computer-related scam.

The man told Pima County deputies on Monday that someone claiming to be from Microsoft called him last week to say five people were hacking his computer and they needed his help and money to find them.

The man transferred $3,000 to the company from his bank account. He also purchased $2,500 in gift cards from Walgreens and Walmart and gave the company representative the card numbers. According to the report, the man said a bank teller and store clerks questioned him about the transactions, but he went through with them.

The victim also told deputies when he questioned someone about the company’s legitimacy, he received an email from the FBI.

Deputies told the man he should report the incident to the Arizona Attorney General’s Office in the hopes he can recover his money.
