Blast

This building in Amado was the scene of a blast in September 2017.

Constantino Varela, 64, was sentenced to six years in prison May 22 after pleading guilty to two counts of unlawful possession of an unregistered destructive device and one count of possession of firearms by a convicted felon.

According to the U.S. Attorney's Office, Varela planted four explosive devices inside an Amado building where he was living because he suspected vandals were breaking in.

An associate of Varela's entered the building on Sept. 17, 2017, and was sprayed with metal balls and nails after he stepped on a pressure-activated switch, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office.
