AARP Tax-Aide volunteers will help Green Valley-area residents prepare and efile their taxes free starting in February.

Tax-Aide’s target clients are seniors, age 50 and older, with low to medium incomes. But the free tax service is available to all area residents, regardless of age or income. AARP membership is not required.

Tax-Aide cannot prepare tax returns involving businesses, farm income, rental property income or complicated partnerships (reported on Forms K-1). Also, because Arizona is a community property state, Married Filing Separately tax returns are out of scope for the AZ Tax-Aide program.

Last year’s Tax Reform Act changed more than just Form 1040’s appearance to postcard size. Standard deductions were drastically increased but personal exemptions were eliminated (until 2025). Self-employed filers picked up a couple of new tax breaks, while qualifying children must now have Social Security numbers.

Low income Arizona residents, 65 and older, could qualify for a Property Tax Credit (PTC). Arizona PTC refunds of up to $502 are available to both home owners and renters. To obtain this credit, filers must provide proof of property tax paid in calendar year 2018 (usually 2nd half 2017 and 1st half 2018 taxes) or an AZ Form 201 provided by their landlord. The other potential AZ refund is a $25 or $50 Excise Tax Credit for lower income single or married AZ filers of any age. Tax-Aide counselors can determine if clients qualify for either or both of these refundable AZ credits.

Area residents wishing to use Tax-Aide’s free service will have five local tax preparation sites to choose from in Southern Arizona through April 15.
