Tinnitus affects an estimated 50 million people and of that group, approximately 12 million seek out treatment. Tinnitus can present in different forms, which include ringing, buzzing, or hissing.
What causes tinnitus?
The onset of tinnitus is often related to exposure to loud sounds which can cause damage to the sensory cells of the inner ear. Other physical causes of tinnitus can include excessive ear wax, ear infection, high blood pressure, and other aging disorders. Activities that can cause tinnitus include drinking alcohol or caffeine, cigarette smoking, taking antibiotics or aspirin.
What can you do if you suspect you’re dealing with tinnitus?
You should first be evaluated in order to determine which options are available for managing it? If no specific medical causes are found, then there are several options to consider. In a majority of the cases, the individual experiencing tinnitus also has some hearing loss. The use of a hearing aid to amplify sounds can help cover up or mask the tinnitus, making it less distracting. Also, there are other devices available that generate sounds that will help mask the tinnitus. Combined with counseling with a hearing professional, these devices can be used to teach an individual how to reduce or remove the distraction of the tinnitus.
