…fun, family, cookies, caroling and eggnog! In the holiday whirlwind it’s easy to get sidetracked from your routine or forget important winter maintenance.
Tips for a healthy holiday season
• Stay as close to your regular sleep schedule as possible.
• Stay hydrated. Coffee, eggnog and cocktails don’t count! Increased coffee intake in cold weather can lead to muscle cramps, headaches or a racing heart. Drink plenty of water instead.
• Don’t stray far from your regular diet and stick to your medication schedule.
• Wear appropriate shoes and clothing to stay warm and safe on slippery walkways.
• Wear slippers or socks with grips on the bottom to avoid falls at home.
• Get your fireplaces/heating serviced and change your filters. Put new batteries in fire alarms and gas sensors and check that they are working. Consider humidifiers to help with the cold, dry air.
• Traveling? Dress in layers, wear comfortable shoes, request airport assistance if needed.
• If family is visiting, have the grandkids help around the house. Don’t seek perfection; just enjoy being together.
• The holidays can be lonely for some and diminished sunshine can make anyone a little blue. Volunteering can be very rewarding.
• Keep safe with face masks and hand sanitizer/frequent washing. COVID-19 is still going strong as well as the flu and RSV.
Get out to enjoy the winter festivities and make time to connect with loved ones.
