Action-packed BAJA play continues

Hickey Automotive won all four games this week, maintaining its lead in the Allison League. Arlie Lyons and Tim Isle accelerated the team with hot bats, as did Tom Kennedy, Randy Higa and Ed Clark on Monday. John Cole, Lou Smith and big Jim McDaniel powered the auto crew on Wednesday.

Tucked in behind the Ritz-Carlton Hotel at Dove Mountain, the Wild Burro Canyon area features a number of picturesque and well-maintained hiking trails, plus great views in the Tortolita Mountains north of Tucson. The Alamo Spring Wild Burro Loop is one option available to hikers.

SPORT OF KINGS: Upgrades at Rillito Park drawing fans

A packed house rose and screamed for their picks as the horses raced to the wire on a recent Sunday at Rillito Park, the second day of an opening weekend that drew more than 11,000 racing enthusiasts to the historic Tucson racetrack.

Family affair on the links: Father and son battle for local club championship

The Feb. 7 match play championship at Desert Hills Golf Club was extra special for the Grone family. That's because 49-year-old Jack Grone was paired with his 74-year-old father, Blaine, in the finale. The two men qualified for that final match after beating five other golfers over the previous few weeks.

Big BAJA hits, good pitching continue

In BAJA Senior Softball, the Catino League featured a battle for the top spot. The Insurance Center of Green Valley still leads, but the week’s big match up of second-place Jeff LeFave Edward Jones Investments was won convincingly by the Investors. The big bat of Al Mitro led the sweep with plenty of help from Mark Hess, who returned from injury.

Out on Three Tank Trail Loop

The Three Tank Trail Loop hike follows a series of trails in Saguaro National Park in the Rincon Mountains. It offers fine views, crested saguaros and a historical site. It is rated moderate by the Green Valley Hiking Club.

Take a hike: Green Valley resident builds hiking scene in Sahuarita

Hiking has been a way of life for 75-year-old Green Valley resident Ed See since he moved from Iowa 13 years ago. See, who was a competitive long distance runner, took up hiking as a way to stay fit while also seeing as much of his new home as possible.

Hickey Automotive, Insurance Center going strong

In week four of the BAJA season at Green Valley's Canoa Preserve Park, the four-team Allison League continues to be led by the boys in blue, Hickey Automotive. With only three losses and a four-game lead, managers Craig Jackson and Lu Smith smile as Tom Kennedy’s straight-up pitching plays into the hands, or gloves, of fielders Ed Clark and John Cole.
