LettersWhy should I do the Census 2010? What is in it for me? Simply put, because you and I don’t want to give away “our world” to someone we do not know and whom we may not like. The number of people representing us in Washington, D.C., and in Phoenix, is determined by the population count from the Census. Why spend a few minutes filling out a 10-question form? Because many things are selected for funding based on the number of people these items will help. This makes “being counted” very important. How important, you ask? Suppose that some federal money becomes available for road repair projects. These projects are suddenly “needed” in Alaska, Florida and Arizona. We know that there are a bunch of potholes right here that need this funding. Some person who has no idea of our needs will just send the money to the place where the most people appear to be helped. Again, Arizona—that’s us—wants this money! We must show that, statewide, our population deserves this fund. Now, Pima County must prove that we need to fix roads more than Maricopa County. With the Census results, we win again. But, our project to rebuild Abrego Drive is rejected. Based on the current Census, only 16 people live in the Abrego corridor. The other 500 did not make time to fill out the Census form. Money follows the Census numbers. Therefore, get everyone you know to fill out the Census form! Let’s be selfish and get things for Green Valley that we deserve. Show the rest of Pima County and Arizona and the United States that Green Valley knows what we need and who we are. We are ready to stand up and be counted. Chet Davis is a Green Valley resident and a member of the Continental School Board. Those claiming to live under the POVERTY LEVEL is exceptionally high in our area, and whether citizens or NOT, THEY OWE IT TO THE COMMUNITIES who have supported their children's education, provided the food banks, and a multitude of social services...to be counted. This would direct federal dollars to help off-set the heavy burden on the taxpayers, as we especially see in the Sahuarita School District. I don't care if they use a name that doesn't even exist, but to be counted and show the government that we need help in this school district, and various economic problems systemic to poverty. For this, I will thank the illegals very much. " Submit a Comment |

First, generations many years forward would have one less place to search for ancestors, and
Secondly, it is dead wrong not to ask citizenship. That will skew the count for the right reasons. "
