Briefs: Opening near for new fire station

Published: Monday, March 1, 2010 9:22 AM MST

A public open house for the new Green Valley Fire District station 151 on La Canada Drive should take place about April 1, according to GVFD board member Dave Appleton.

As of late February, the plumbing and painting was substantially complete along with the electrical system at the building, and landscape work had begun, Appleton reported at a GVFD board meeting Wednesday.

Staff should be able to move into the new station after March 18, he said.

The environmentally certified “green” building will replace the existing, outdated station 151 at 555 N. La Canada Drive.

Committee approves West Center change

The Green Valley Community Coordinating Council’s Planning and Architectural Review Committee on Thursday unanimously approved modifications to woodworking facilities at Green Valley Recreation’s West Center.

The committee approved GVR’s plans for a 26-by-9-foot concrete slab upon which the lapidary club will place its rock-cutting machinery. A 4-foot-high wall will shield the slab and machinery from view and it will be covered, said GVR’s assistant manager of building services, Scott Peters.

The site is on the south side of the West Center, west of the wood shop.

Not too late for Girl Scout cookies

Two rainy weekends have prompted the Sahuaro Girl Scout Council to extend its cookie sales through next Sunday.

Today was scheduled to be the last day to purchase Girl Scout Cookies at booths set up at shopping locations around southern Arizona.

“The booths got rained out two weekends in a row so, that put a big damper on sales,” said Debbie Rich, Sahuaro Girl Scout Council CEO. “We need to give our Girl Scouts a chance to sell the cookies they still have.”

Cookie fans can find a booth near them by visiting www.sahuarogsc.org, clicking on the “I love Girl Scout Cookies” banner at the top of the page, then clicking on “Cookie Locator.”

Cookies also can be purchased - and donated to the Troop to Troop program - at the Sahuaro Girl Scout Council headquarters, 4300 E. Broadway. The office is open Mondays through Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and on Fridays and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Troop to Troop donations also can be made by calling the Council at 520-319-3172.

Cookies sell for $4 a box, with $3.10 from each box sold staying with Sahuaro Girl Scouts, to support their programs.
