I-19 goes down to one lane each way

About 1,500 feet of Interstate 19 is down to one lane in each direction for three months while workers expand and reinforce the Continental Road overpass, according to the Pima County Department of Transportation.

Southbound traffic goes down to one lane just north of Continental Road. At present, the left southbound lane is closed. It will switch to the right lane about halfway through the project. The road narrowed on Monday.

Workers will reinforce the concrete pillars then remove the wall of dirt underneath part of the overpass. This will allow room for the addition of multipurpose lanes along Continental Road, said Louis Gonzales, a spokesman for PCDOT.

Gonzales said they hoped to have the overpass renovation completed before Green Valley’s winter visitors returned but were held up by required archeological excavation in the area.

However, the 18-month east frontage road/Continental Road project, which broke ground in July, is on schedule, he said.
