Roundabout confusion: Sign changes should help drivers

The recently completed roundabout at Continental Road and Camino del Sol may be natural for some drivers but it poses quite a learning curve for others.

Residents report confusion, driving errors and near-collisions in the short time the roundabout has been open.

Carole Shultz said she was driving west on Continental toward the roundabout about noon Nov. 3, when she found a woman coming at her in her lane.

“I don’t know how on earth she got on that road, I really don’t know,” she said. “It’s like she thought it was a two-lane road. She shocked me and I pulled over.... that kind of thing happens so fast.”

Even with three large black-and-white chevron arrow signs that read “one way” within the roundabout, one driver coming west from La Canada and entering the roundabout was easily confused.

She turned left into oncoming roundabout traffic instead of bearing right and nearly caused a head-on collision.

At the Nov. 10 Green Valley Community Coordinating Council Traffic and Arroyos meeting, Traffic Studies Manager Mo Farhat of the Pima County Department of Transportation said it’s important to pay careful attention and observe the “yield” and “one way” signs at the roundabout.

He said some drivers may not know what “yield” means.

A yield traffic sign means a driver must slow down and prepare to stop if necessary — usually while merging into traffic on another road — but needn’t stop if the way is clear.

Vehicles entering the roundabout from any direction must yield to traffic in the roundabout and wait until it is safe to enter.

Farhat said signage changes are being made to help make the roundabout easier to negotiate and safer for drivers.

Three black and white “one way” signs will be replaced with black and yellow signs and will be placed lower to be more in line with drivers’ eye levels. The changes are expected by about Nov. 25.

" Gee, big surprise. All intersections in Green Valley are all the same, then the county throws in this roundabout and drivers are consfused. Go figure. It cost a lot of money and it's not a good idea. There were and are problems with the roundabout at the Canoa Exit as well. You think the county would have learned from that one and not put a roundabout at Camino del Sol and Continental or at least improved sinage or design!!! I fear there will be many near misses and accidents at these two spots. Cyclists - I really fear for you. "

" Is this really a surprise to anyone who lives here? Anyone ever feel comfortable driving on a roundabout in the first place? Add to the mix the great number of confused drivers, plus the strange approaches for bicycles/carts, and this intersection is a mess. "

" Is this roundabout another great GVCCC idea? Are the people who can't figure out this roundabout the same ones who were confused by the wrong-time clock on the Bank of America? Just wondering why the GVCCC has to meddle in all the wrong places. "

" Why do these "nit wits" want to create more diversions for us drivers. The round a round is a ridiculous idea at best. It causes more accidents, (ask the insurance co's), it causes road rage (how did you feel the last time you were in one) Or is it that the county has a surplus of money they need to spend??? Why doesn't our government ask us for input???? "

" If you ask the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (search iihs.org) you'll see that they favor modern roundabouts because they have fewer serious crashes than comparable signals. "

" ScottB: roundabout accidents may be less serious, as opposed to being T-boned at an intersection, but here where the speeds are low, drivers easily confused and bikers and pedestrians are prevalent, I can only think the roundabout will be problematic. I predict more accidents and hopefully they are just "fender benders" and not more dead bikers. Glad I don't often drive on that street! "

" As a matter of well established fact, roundabouts are much safer than traditional intersections. Interested readers can learn more at iihs.org/sr/pdfs/sr3505.pdf.

My personal response to roundabouts is appreciation for the use of the this effective design. "
