NewsDrivers heading west to Continental Shopping Plaza from Abrego Drive or the U.S. Post Office have been faced with orange and white barriers blocking multiple lanes. But with no visible construction taking place at the entrance to the shopping plaza residents wondered why the lanes were closed off. Further confusion existed for drivers exiting Interstate 19 at Continental who had to pass two lanes of barriers before making a turn. On Nov. 9, Property Manager Roxanne Aiken of Wilson Property Services, which manages Continental Shopping Plaza, sent a letter to Sandra Stone, chair of the Green Valley Community Coordinating Council’s Traffic and Arroyos Committee to voice concern about the detours. Speaking on behalf of the owner of Continental Plaza and the majority of tenants, Aiken said, “Some of the detours seem to be located in areas where work is not in progress, e.g. the detours that lead from the underpass all the way to the entrance of the Shopping Plaza.” Aiken said vehicles have been observed driving in the wrong lanes and/or going in the wrong direction and that after dark the detours are “poorly lighted, complicated and somewhat harrowing.” GVCCC First Vice President Susanne Blodgett, who attended the Nov. 9 meeting, said Wednesday that work is now in process at the underpass. “Qwest will be running cables. Trenching is now being done to lay the new cables so much of the area needs to be closed off,” she said. To prepare for the trenching work, boulders at the underpass have been removed and the area needs to be secured. More than the entrance to the Shopping Plaza being a traffic concern, Aiken said drivers exiting the post office had been turning left where there was a wide opening in the barricades. She suggested that this be corrected so drivers cannot make left turns exiting the post office. As of Wednesday, the entrance to and exit from the post office was more clearly delineated. The entire construction project is expected to take 15 more months. Contact Green Valley freelance reporter Ellen Sussman at ellen2414@cox.net.

Since we have so many visitors to the area, there should be double the number of barricades, so that folks are unable to squeeze their cars/carts into areas where they should not be driving. Also, westbound Continental should not funnel directly into the left turn only bay for the frontage road. The mainline should be returned to the right lane before the left turn entrance. Green Valley has always been a very uncomplicated town, built primarily on a grid system.
To believe that anyone who has ever applied for, taken the driver's test, and received a drivers license does not know what a "YIELD" sign means...is insulting!
Most people, unless you have lived in the screwed up traffic systems of the East Coast, or England, France, et al, and especially the older citizens of GV, are not used to "ROUND ABOUTS"...WHICH CITIES IN THE EAST ARE ELIMINATING...AND ESPECIALLY WHEN THEY ARE IN THE SMALL CIRCUMFERANCE OF THESE 3 BEING BUILT IN THE GV AREA!
A large circular "round about" is easier to drive...but not these inverted short ones being created here. "
