Elections and auditions

Published: Tuesday, November 10, 2009 10:35 PM MST

Editor:

Just a year ago, Democrats were in a jubilant mood over Barack Obama’s victory and they were full of excited talk about how they would be the dominant force for the next few decades and Republicans were concerned that they might be facing years in the political wilderness.

Now, after the recent elections, it is Republicans who are walking with a certain strut and Democrats are hoping the results were just local anomalies and not some national trend.

Perhaps both place too much emphasis on what happens Election Day.

To use the language of theater, a winning campaign is rather like the audition of an actor that earns a coveted role.

It’s all very nice, but if the actor performs poorly in the role, people aren’t going to remember how great the audition had been.

And politicians are like actors; if they don’t seem up to the job, there are lots of others out there who will be trying to convince us to give them a shot at the part.
