A Green Valley man pulled a gun on a suspected illegal immigrant last week when the man entered his garage and asked for water, according to a Pima County Sheriff’s report.

The resident told the 9-1-1 dispatcher that at about 5 p.m. Thursday a Hispanic man in a T-shirt and blue baseball cap “barged in to” his garage and began asking for water in Spanish, the report said.

The house, off of Camino Del Sol in the 1600 block of Retorno de Manana, in Desert Hills V, borders undeveloped desert.

The man said he grabbed his gun and the suspected illegal immigrant left, according to the report.

Sheriff’s deputies found the man nearby and turned him over to the Border Patrol.

" How in the world was the homeowner to know that ALL the illegal wanted was water. The illegal could have been a drug smuggler with his bundles sitting in the brush in the desert and wanted to jump the home owner and steal his vehicle. Do not be blinded by compassion and a sense of kindness. I have personally seen what these illegals are prepared to do to get what and where they want. Desperation can and does drive them to do harm to you. Don't take chances. Protect yourself first. Call BP or other law enforcement. The illegal will get that drink of water. But from a holding cell. " Where is our humanity???? The Hispanic, although not proven to be an illegal, probably was just that. But he was a human being. Give him the water, and then call the authorities. Have we really become this low? I am ashamed of this resident. "

" I had the same experience a few weeks ago. I was approching the trust land gate to go for a hike and a gentelman was comming out. He asked for water. I said I would drive him to my home for water and food. He said he had a friiend waiting in the desert and went back a short way to get him. We drove to my place. I showed them where the Cokes were in the frig, layed out clean clothing and towels so they could shower and then drove to Safeway for steaks and fixings. Alfontso asked if there was someplace they could exchange paseos fpr dollars. I said that wasn't a good idea here in Green Valley and gave them each a twenty, a ten and a five. Alfonso cooked the steaks with a Mexican sauce. After a seasta I drove them to Tucson where Alfonso met up with his brother. Driving home I was happier than I have been in a long time, gratefull that I was able to exercise my humanity and knowing that I was pleasing to God. "

" Altho I question the quote that the thirsty man "barged" into the GV man's garage, it is understandable to be a little nervous when a stranger approaches. It's gratifying, tho, to read so many compassionate comments (and sad to read the hate-filled ones). This issue of illegals in our area could be helped by putting the Border Patrol ON THE BORDER. The failed border policies are exacerbating this problem. The incredible amount of waste in this agency (ever wonder how much gas is used for the big SUVs that cruise around here, 30 miles from the border, or for the empty Wackenhut buses that travel up and down the interstate?) could be put to better use ON THE BORDER. "

" Too many of these comments are xenophobic.

You don't know he was illegal, you just assume. Give him a bottle of water and he is on his way.

By the way, the guy who thinks he might get a gun to defend himself. The odds are you will wind up shooting yourself or somebody else accidentally if you don't spend a GREAT DEAL OF TIME to learn how to respect the weapon, how to use it, and what to do or not do, you are better off with a baseball bat.

" Turns out he was a raving lunatic illegal alien, as you will see if you read what this paper's editor wrote in the letter's section.

Perhaps all of the people who want to aid and abet the illegals ( and you will in fact be breaking our laws by doing so ) could get together and rent a large place out in the desert where you can feed, clothe and shelter them, educate their children, take care of their many medical problems, and so on, because the majority of the rest of us are way way beyond tired of doing this with our tax dollars. " I am so very thankful that there are such kind and wonderful people in Green Valley! I don't always agree with illegal immigration but we are all god's children! "
