By Ellen Sussman, Special to The Sahuarita SunThey seem to fly through the air with the greatest of ease... they also roll, tumble, climb and move with poise and youthful energy. Every Monday night, 25 young, flexible and limber girls ages 5 to 18 meet at Dawn Elkins’ Sahuarita All-Stars gym to do cheer stunts, gymnastics and dance routines. And they make it look so easy. “They’re called All-Stars because they have to do everything well,” Elkins said. “They’ve been in seven Cheerleaders of America competitions this year. One was in Irvine, Calif., and one was in Las Vegas.” After moving to Rancho Sahuarita and seeing the need for a local cheer program, Elkins started Sahuarita All-Stars in January 2007 with one team of 14 girls. This year, there are 25 energetic and athletic girls in three teams — minis, juniors and seniors. Elkins recently moved her team from space at Rancho Sahuarita to a gym in Green Valley at 630 Ward Lane, opening up the program to those not living in Rancho Sahuarita. “This is a fun, safe place to be. And we promote good grades. Those on the team learn time management, teamwork and commitment. This makes them good athletes. And they get to travel,” Elkins said. When any one of her limber young ladies pulls off a move, Elkins is quick to give a genuine hug. Looking at both, it’s hard to tell who is more thrilled. Although the current teams are all girls she said boys are welcome and there is one male coach, Jose Rangel. More than the athletic component of her program, Elkins promotes giving back to the community. Working with Sertino’s Coffee and Ice Cream as a sponsor, in January she’ll work with the girls in a food drive. Tryouts are usually held in April and the cheer season runs August through April. For high school cheerleaders who want to stay fit, Elkins will soon be starting a Saturday program. Those interested can call now. Elkins is knowledgeable about all facets of gymnastics, has several professional certifications and is certified in sports first aid. For further information call Elkins at 668-3074.
