Rest stop reaction

Published: Tuesday, November 3, 2009 10:57 PM MST

Editor:

A few days ago I was driving on Interstate 10 from Green Valley to Southern California.

I knew that there were rest stop closures due to governor (I am purposely using lower-case) Jan Brewer’s budget-cutting tactics.

There was only one open rest stop all the way to the California border and that one was west of Phoenix and three hours from Green Valley.

What a travesty—not only uncomfortable for humans and pets, but a danger as well.

Hundreds of long-haul truckers use these rest stops to get a few much-needed hours of sleep as it can be difficult for them to find adequate parking spots in restaurants, malls, and streets.

So governor Brewer’s decision has not only made us physically uncomfortable but could also lead to many more highway fatalities due to tired truck drivers.

Maintaining these rest stops must be a drop in Arizona’s fiscal bucket compared to other things that could be cut back.

Or how about a small ‘Use Tax’ at the rest stops?

If not a “Use Tax’ at the rest stops then how about one at the Capital Building in Phoenix?
