There will be no gardening seminar at East Center on Thursday. The Members’ Activities Committee of the Green Valley Gardeners’ has arranged a field trip “behind the scenes” at the Arizona/Sonora Desert Museum.

However, the Seminar Committee has been hard at work on our Winter/Spring seminar series and it is almost complete. After the Nov. 19 seminar on Caring for Citrus, we take a holiday break. Then, starting Jan. 7, we resume with our favorite “kick off” speaker, Les Hayt, formerly of The Greenbelt Nursery. Les will hold a demonstration on how to properly prune roses to prepare them for their winter nap and to discourage diseases and pests.

Many of you were disappointed two weeks ago when our speaker on hummingbirds, Sheri Williamson of Southeastern Arizona Bird Observatory, had a last-minute dental emergency and had to cancel. The day was saved by our faithful Pima County Master Gardeners who quickly organized a “Ask a Master Gardener Panel” to fill the time slot You will be pleased to hear that we have rescheduled Sheri and her hummingbird seminar for March 18.

Other topics lined up for 2010 include trees and shrubs for small spaces and for shade, sustainable urban landscaping, water conservation issues, attracting pollinators and appreciating our insect population, gardening therapy for people with disabilities, and the ever popular “closing your house for the summer.”

Meanwhile, we will resume seminars Nov. 5, when we will bring back Francesca Moses and Kathy Stone of Earth Angels. Francesca and Kathy will be demonstrating how they create stunning container gardens to dress up your winter patio.
