“Elated.”

That’s how Green Valley Community Coordinating Council Executive Director Sandi Richey said she felt upon learning that the scheduled Oct. 17 Household Hazardous Waste Collection day had been saved for this year.

Richey praised activist and GVCCC environmental committee member Bill Katzel for his energy and resolve in saving the collection day amid Pima County budget constraints.

“Bill was the bulldog we needed to get the job done,” Richey said. “He knows the ins and outs of government.”

She also expressed thanks to Pima County District 4 Supervisor Ray Carroll and his Special Assistant Tom Ward and those who will be helping on Oct. 17 — Sahuarita Auxiliary Volunteers, Valley Presbyterian Church, the Green Valley Marines (Marine Corp League) and BAJA (Born Again Jocks Association) for their efforts.

Additionally, Richey said Freeport McMoRan is donating collection barrels and some accredited HHW personnel.

“The hazardous waste collection day is a big help to our residents in disposing items like fluorescents, paint, batteries and chemicals. These items can now be disposed of in proper places. Not taking these items to the proper places could affect our water and pose dangers,” she said.

Business and commercial waste, gas cylinders, explosives or ammunition, controlled substances and medications cannot be disposed of at the Oct. 17 household collection.

Medications may be disposed at any Green Valley Fire Station in the Dispose-A-Med box.
