GV hotel tones down its colors

The orange, red and yellow Quality Inn Express at La Canada Drive and Esperanza Boulevard is getting a muted make-over, thanks to pressure from the Green Valley Community Coordinating Council.

Although the hotel has donned the bright color scheme for less than a year, the vibrant palette proved to be too spicy for some Green Valley residents, who said the building looked out of place in the community.

After members of the GVCCC’s Planning and Architectural Committee appealed to the Choice Hotel Corporation, which owns the Quality Inn franchise, officials ordered a repainting of the building in toned-down hues.

Hotel owner Abhilash Patel said it would be spring before he had the money to repaint. But Choice Hotels threatened to keep the Green Valley Quality Inn Express off its reservation system until it was repainted, according to the council.

Painters were hard at work last week splashing the stucco walls in shades of light yellow and off-white.

The 108-room hotel was painted last year around the same time Green Valley Village went from dull light pink to blocks of yellow, purple and terracota in an effort to rejuvenate the shopping center.


Patel did not return several calls seeking comment.

" I’m ashamed that part of my HOA dues go to the GVCCC . A business owner puts fresh paint on his hotel and makes other improvements on behalf of tourists and guests in Green Valley and the GVCCC doesn’t like the color scheme. Rather than celebrate a business improvement (and the fact that another business isn’t down the tubes) they work against them to make them spend tens of thousands of dollars to repaint into a dull color. Kudos to Green Valley Village for bringing some color to our desert city. Kudos to the Quality Inn owners for trying to do the same. Shame on GVCCC for putting the screws to a business and working against the economy of Green Valley. Look around town. Maybe the GVCCC should worry more about the multitude of empty businesses and offices as well as those businesses that could use a fresh coat of paint because it’s peeling or looking neglected. "

" Sorry folks, but enough color is enough. In the eyesore loudness of the motel colors, it should be toned down....a motel is for sleeping, not staying wide awake. There are enough "noisy" colors, the motel didn't need them too. Thanks Council for "quieting down" the heavy colors.... "

" The old people in Green Valley need to quite griping about things that make our comunity look good. Just because they are old and crusty does not mean our building need to be. That motel and the Green Valley Vilage mall are a bright spot in an otherwise dreary Green Valley. " I liked the colors, thought they brightened up the community a bit. What a shame a few whiners can force a business to paint their exterior. I suppose the new Legion on Esparanza will be next. Green Valley needs a little color, what a bland town. Everything is beige. How boring! "

" I'm with BA - see comments above. What a terrible thing to make a business owner spend thousands of dollars in this economy. Are the colors too ethnic? Does everything have to be dull? I love the new colors in the Green Valley Village, and I think the hotel fits right in. It will serve the GVCCC right if the hotel goes out of business and sits there empty for years. Wake up people. This is a very sad thing. Shame on you. "

" It was nice to see the effort put in by the owner to spruce his business up. Am I to assume that the GVCC is also pressuring the rest of the Green Valley Businesses who used the same colors to repaint their properties or was Mr. Patel the only one they singled out. Somehow this matter seems beyond the realm of GVCC responsibilities!! I will think carefully about any support they want from me in the future. "

" The colors were ugly. Even uglier than the mall (which is the mall no matter what some far-away marketer thinks). But GVCC was wrong to force a new paint job so soon unless someone in GV hates it enough to pay for it personally.

Dr. Patel pays taxes, and has kept his employees with jobs, when during the slow times, he could have easily laid them off. Unless the GVCC is paying his taxes and other bills, which I'm sure they are not, why is it their right to force a new paint job?? What a shame. "

" Why are some of the buildings in the Green Valley Mall not painted to match the others recently painted? There are a number of them that are just natural stone color. Different owners? If not the remainder should be painted to that there is cohesion in the color scheme. "

" GVCC had no business interfering. What's next??? The Quality Inn was not breaking any laws - just trying to brighten up a drab building. Good for them. If you don't like the colors - don't look. Maybe someone doesn't like the color of your house so you should change it - at YOUR expense.

Well good for you - you were born and raised here. Probably one of a handful. I don't like the interference from the council, but let's be clear. Most of the people here are not from the East. They are from the midwest, CA, and other parts of AZ as far as I know. But that is not important. It is part of the same country and there would be no Green Valley if these people had not come here. "
