From the Editor: Here’s one opinion I’m not offering

Published: Tuesday, October 6, 2009 10:03 PM MST

I learned years ago that one man’s trash is another man’s art.

I was at a Palm Springs museum for the opening of an art exhibit. I went for the free food.

It wasn’t long before I found myself staring at a piece of “modern art” that I just couldn’t figure out.

I’ll spare you the dramatic buildup and get to the punch line: I nudged the guy next to me and said, “Have you ever seen anything uglier in your life?”

His reply has kept me in check ever since:

“The artist is my wife.”

I slowly and cautiously drifted away, snagged another one of those small sandwiches and slipped out the door. It was a long walk home.

So, what do I think of that eye-catching paint job on the Quality Inn at La Canada and Esperanza?

None of your business.

Besides, you people have enough opinions of your own.

Today’s Letters to the Editor contains several. Click the link below to see comments at the end of the story.

For those who don’t remember the story, the Quality Inn Express was painted about a year ago in colors that could best be described as bold. (That’s an understatement.)

The GVCCC put pressure on corporate, and they put pressure on the owners. The result: A new, tone-down paint job.

Below is what people are saying about it.

" As I walked around the Farmer's Market this morning, I noticed that the GVCC and Green Valley News offices are painted in the orange/gold tones that Dr. Patel was forced to remove---so when is your painting party? "

" As someone else corrected, it's just the Quality Inn, no "Express." A nice addition to our community, no matter the color. But Dan, the point is not the color, it's how the GVCCC went on a power trip and cost a local business thousands of unnecessary dollars in a time when we should be grateful for each viable business in town. That's due some editorial comment! "
