ColumnsGood morning! Another beautiful day in the valley. Means of communication from organ to organ and from cell to cell within each organ is truly a marvel. It is exciting to note how we change physically and mentally as we age, particularly from our early teens on. We change in most every way from 8 to 10 years of age in development and maturity mentally and physically up to about age 30, give or take a few years. From age 35 on, physically and mentally we change considerably each year depending on how well we take care of ourselves and how we use ourselves. If we don’t use our bodies regularly in some physical fashion, they will deteriorate faster. If we overuse our bodies, they deteriorate and break down faster mainly from ongoing gravity. We may not be aware of this until some portion starts to complain. Then, many times we want a quick fix which has brought on the increasing expertise in the surgical field and in the drug/pharmaceutical division. Research has shown us that whatever the cellular nutrition state is, the brain can continue to advance even with changes in interest as long as we respect mental overload from emotional stress and worry. This can cause cellular breakdown and dysfunction, the same as we experience with overload of the musculoskeletal system. Physical cellular changes are expressed by pain and increasing limitation in motion. Brain cell changes are expressed by loss of memory and mental orientation. We have two major means of cellular communication. The glandular, hormone-producing mechanism has been utilized by the animal kingdom since the beginning of time. For many, many thousands and millions of years it was the only inter- and inner cellular communication. In the beginning it worked fine because it was constant and maintained good stability of cellular communication and intercellular function but it was slow to communicate. With advances in the animal kingdom and ultimately man, a quicker means of communication was required. This was the beginning of the autonomic nervous system. As with the hormonal system, checks and balances were required in the autonomic nervous system, thus re-establishment of the sympathetic portion which acts as an activator and the parasympathetic which acts as an inhibitor of cellular activity. The brain slowly began to grow and develop to the size it is today. This allows us as highly developed individuals to become great at accomplishments and also destruction. Without good understanding of some of these principles, we may not realize that we can be our own worst enemies and we truly, many times actually are creating ill health. From age 1 on to about 30 to 35, we all grow and develop our hormonal glandular system in a relatively balanced way. This is influenced by our upbringing, probably some heredity and certainly our geographic environment. Then, because of all these influences, we arrive at age 35 in a relatively balanced way hormone-wise. The hormone levels do not all digress at the same speed or the same amounts. Health complications may be secondary to mental expression and actions secondary to these inner imbalances. The autonomic nervous system with its ability to change things quickly and sometimes explosively can override the hormonal balancing mechanism giving us digestive problems, mental changes in the way of anxiety and depression, hypertension, hot flashes, and other cardiovascular changes. These hormonal and autonomic nervous system and central nervous system imbalances along with eventually permanent cellular changes that will take place are the beginning of accelerated aging and increasing oxidation (rusting). The ultimate outcome may be cancer, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, mental changes, neurological changes in the way of Parkinson’s, multiple sclerosis and/or musculoskeletal changes such as arthritis, chronic fatigue syndrome and fibromyalgia. If you wonder how far all of this has gone, look at the last page of the last AARP magazine. Pain, high blood pressure, stress, most gastrointestinal problems and insomnia are all outward and internal expressions of the body telling you that something is wrong and it should be corrected and not just covered up. Millions of pills are taken every day to locally correct or cover up the underlying cause. Does the means of inner and intercommunication play a role? How does intercellular communication play a role in diabetes, cholesterol problems, blood pressure problems, gastrointestinal problems and insomnia? In the next article, we will begin discussing the relationship between many of the common aging diseases, brain function, and the inner and intercellular communicating faculties.
