NewsWhat was billed as a health care forum turned into a no-holds-barred attack on health care bill HR3200 Friday night in Sahuarita. The Quail Creek Republican Club sponsored the forum at the Madera Clubhouse, where two speakers and 125 people in attendance said the bill would destroy a system that works and would challenge the freedom doctors have. Nobody spoke in favor of health care reform bills under consideration in Congress. Dr. Philip Bakody, medical director of the Department of Radiology at University Physicians Hospital, quoted a Stanford University medical colleague who said 80 to 85 percent of Americans are pleased with their health care. A radiologist since 1984, Bakody said a big cost in medicine is malpractice, and tort reform has not been addressed in the health care bill. Several members of Congress, including U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, D-Ariz., have said tort reform is a must for any bill they support. The Obama administration said last week that new Census numbers put the number of uninsured in the U.S. at more than 46 million, and they are a big part of the reason to revamp national health care. Sen. John McCain, who held a health care forum Friday night in Oro Valley, said something needs to be done but said the Obama administration needs to reach out more aggressively to minority Republicans. Dr. Jane Orient, who has been in private practice in internal medicine since 1981, said medicine should improve the quality of life, not save money. Not providing medically necessary procedures could be considered a crime, but keeping doctors from performing certain services will reduce costs, she said. “I’m very much against this bill ... we need to get back to freedom in medicine,” she said. WILMA wrote on Sep 20, 2009 9:50 AM: " TORT REFORM SOUNDS LIKE A GOOD IDEA FOR SAVING MONEY BY PROTECTING DOCTORS FROM ALL THE LAW SUITS THAT ARE FRIVOLOUSLY FILED. " John wrote on Sep 20, 2009 11:16 AM: " I have noticed that all the opponents to any health care bill are insured. I have not seen one individual speak out against the reform after they have been excluded by health insurance companies for pre-existing conditions, lose coverage for a handicapped child after they reach the age of 18, or loses coverage after they lose their job. The 85% of Americans that are satisfied with their current health care are the 85% of American that are insured. " JM G wrote on Sep 20, 2009 4:59 PM: " Hmmm, I think I will avoid services from Dr. Orient and University Physicians Hospital. If the good docs don't understand that medicine is already "rationed" by insurance companies and ability to pay, I don't want to have to worry about what they maybe didn't "get" in med school or medical advances that they might have missed since graduating. Dr. Bakody's assertion that malpractice is a big problem kind of indicates that he has had some significant experience with malpractice claims. If they are both so callous as to think it's okay for health care to be for sale to the highest bidder, I also don't want them to treat me. I'd be afraid of being tossed under the bus if/when my means/insurance ran out. I currently have excellent means and moderately decent insurance, but it only takes one serious illness to wipe that out. I want universal coverage with a public OPTION. " C Gordon wrote on Sep 21, 2009 7:24 AM: " Did anyone really expect that anyone with an MD is going to support a plan that will reduce his/her personal income and possibly eliminate their excessive lifestyle? Get real. I watched the panel of insurance companies testifying this weekend. Same old story. "We can't do anything about the rising cost of healthcare". Bet they all flew there in their private jets as well. Greed has taken over America. " Submit a Comment |
