The Valley Players, Green Valley’s community theater group, will hold auditions for its fall production, “Chapter Two” by Neil Simon, on Sept. 14, at West Center auditorium, and Sept. 16, at Desert Hills Center, both at 6 p.m.

This is the first time auditions for a Valley Players production will be open to the public as part of an effort to expand participation, said Roberta Konen, who will direct the production.

“You don’t have to be a Green Valley Recreation member, a member of the Valley Players, or a resident of Green Valley to audition or be cast,” said Konen, who has directed and acted in dozens of local productions since moving to Green Valley in 1999.

“The play is a wonderful combination of life and love, and is full of the side-splitting humor that only Simon can write,” Konen said.

The play was first presented on Broadway in 1977, and is Simon’s version of how he and his second wife, Marsha Mason, met and married.

There are four roles available — two men and two women — and “everyone aged 20 to 80 is eligible because we can adjust the script to fit the ages of the actors selected,” Konen said. “We have altered the scripts in the past to fit the ages, and even the sexes, of the actors and can do so again for this production,” she said.

“The play tells the story of Jennie and George — he a new widower, she a divorcee — who meet through a mistaken telephone call and end up deeply in love,” Konen said.

Also included in the cast are George’s brother, Leo, and Jennie’s best friend, Faye, “who end up having a hilarious romp in the hay,” Konen said.

“Chapter Two” will be presented Thursday through Saturday, Nov. 12-14, starting at 7 p.m., and Sunday, Nov. 15, at 2 p.m. at West Center auditorium.

Konen said auditions will involve reading a two-person scene. Those who want to read the scene in advance to prepare can call Konen at 625-8070 to get a copy of the script.

Previous theatrical experience is helpful, but not required.

“ I can work with people and offer a great deal of support and guidance since I’ve been directing plays for the past 50 years,” Konen said.

“If you’ve always wanted to go on stage with a great support system and great play, here’s your chance. We want more people to participate and are looking for new faces,” she said. “We always give new people a chance and try to have new people in every cast.”

Anyone who has questions about the auditions is asked to call Konen. Actors selected for the cast will need to rehearse three times a week, Mondays and Wednesdays from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to noon at GVR centers.
