An 84-year-old Green Valley man died Thursday morning after the bicycle he was riding was struck by a car at Desert Bell Drive and Calle de Oro.

Sheriff's deputies said Jerome David Featherman was riding in the bike lane wearing a helmet and reflective vest when he was struck about 9:35 a.m.

He was pronounced dead at a Tucson hospital.

David Armstrong, the driver of the four-door Toyota Camry that hit Featherman, was cited for "violation of the three-foot rule" for cyclists and driving in a bike path, Pima County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Dawn Barkman said.

Armstrong, 76, was southbound on Desert Bell Drive when he hit the cyclist, who also was southbound.

Alcohol and drugs were not a factor in the crash.

" I do not pretend to be privy to all the facts or policies or procedures so I will be simply asking a question. While I did not witness the accident, I did see this poor gentleman lying in the street unconscious and bleeding when the deputies arrived. It was at this point that I left so as not to be in the way. We know from the report on the radio this morning, the man died at the hospital after, I assume, being taken there by ambulance.

As I said, I am not privy to policies and procedures and perhaps not all of the facts, but here is the question. We know that helicopters are sent to medivac illegals from overturned vehicles on I-19 so why not this critically injured man who was a citizen of the United States? "

" I don't know for a fact but the man may have been dead at the scene. Paramedics would have known but can't pronounce him dead. Only a doctor can pronounce someone dead. If that was the case, there's no reason to fly a helicopter out. "

" Perhaps this horrible tragedy for both men and their families will remind us all that we drive potentially lethal weapons. It takes only seconds to end a life. "
