Special to the Green Valley News

When facing a feast, first try a taste.

“Taste of OLLI” offers a three-day sampling of a banquet of study groups that will be offered by the Green Valley affiliate of the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at the University of Arizona during the fall 2009 semester.

The Retreat at Santa Rita Springs, 661 W. Calle Torres Blancas (between South Abrego and the East Frontage Road), will host “tastings” of six classes:

  • Shakespeare’s Richard III and The Merchant of Venice, 2 p.m. on Aug. 31.

  • Maintaining a Healthy and Active Brain, 3 p.m. on Aug. 31

  • What They Forgot to Tell You When You Started to Study History, 2 p.m. on Sept. 7.

  • The Future of Freedom, 3 p.m. on Sept. 7.

  • Web 2.0 - The Brave New World of Blogs, Wikis and Tweets, 2 p.m. on Sept. 14.

  • Native American Foods, 3 p.m. on Sept. 14.

Please RSVP to the Retreat at 399-2792.

Participants also will receive information about more than 30 topics to be studied during the fall semester, Sept. 28 through Nov. 20.

Most study groups meet for 90 minutes once a week, Monday through Friday, for either four or eight consecutive weeks. A few assorted topics are addressed in one or two classes.

The nationwide, university-affiliated OLLI program is for adults over 50 who want to share their passion for knowledge and interest in learning.

The annual cost of an OLLI/Green Valley membership is $130, which permits members to take as many courses as they wish during the eight-week fall and spring semesters as well as the four-week June program. A half-year membership for either the Fall or Spring semester is $95.

Membership/registration packets are available at the Joyner-Green Valley Library. For additional information, contact Penny Schmitt at the OLLI/UA office, (520) 626-9039 or ollimail@u.arizona.edu, or visit www.olli.arizona.edu.
