LettersFrom the Editor : Young politician takes his shot
I met Jesse Kelly for coffee a few days back and the first thing I did was apologize for wearing short pants. “But it’s August, it’s Arizona and it’s a hundred degrees outside,” I said. “And it’s Saturday morning.” Don’t worry about it, he said, adding, “I think my shorts-wearing days are over.” Could be, but it’s by choice. Kelly is running against Rep. Gabrielle Giffords for the House seat in District 8. Actually, he’s not quite that far yet — the GOP likely won’t pick a candidate for another year. But that hasn’t slowed Kelly, whose team has been sending out e-mails since he announced his bid April 2 — less than three months into Giffords’ second term. He said he has gathered a mountain of support in a short period. “People are hungry,” he told me. Our discussion was wide-ranging, so I’ll get out of the way and let the man who’s motto is “Send a Warrior to Congress” introduce himself to Green Valley. Here are his thoughts on a variety of topics: Find out more at www.votejessekelly.com. My quick impression is that he isn’t like a lot of people in politics today. Maybe it’s that he hasn’t spent the bulk of his life there and hasn’t become another talking head for his party, yet. When you compare his bank account with Giffords’, he looks like a GOP sacrificial lamb. But coming off a year unlike any this country has seen in decades, don’t count him out. This could be one of those rare races where money doesn’t decide the winner. — Dan Shearer

Perhaps this is the change we need. " Jonathan wrote on Aug 10, 2009 1:27 PM: " Jesse Kelly seems to be working harder than Giffords past challengers. Obama will bleed seats in the mid-term elections and I believe Giffords is one of the most likely to go. The people are demanding her to answer questions on Obamacare and she is hiding. Hope she shows up to Kelly's debate challenge on Aug. 18th. " Wren wrote on Aug 11, 2009 10:30 AM: " I'm looking forward to learning more about Jesse Kelly. Besides dodging her constituents on the issue of healthcare, Giffords has turned a blind eye to the DAILY drug trafficking crossing the border in HER district! Maybe we DO need an ex-Marine to tackle the issues!! " Linda Bulla wrote on Aug 25, 2009 5:48 PM: " I know Jesse is not old enough to remember when Ronald Reagan got in office. He cried like a baby because the Democrats left him with so many problems. Reagan should have been president after the George W Bush administration. Then he would have had something to cry about. The worse economy for 70 years. Not one but 2 wars! Record high unemployment and the world hating us. Obama has much to cry about but he doesn't . Read your history Jesse. You don't look too bright to us thinking Americans. " Submit a Comment |

Indiana's new mayor squashed the incumbent Democrat with very little name recognition or money. Jason Chaffetz of Utah beat a well-established Republican incumbent who had grand name recognition and the RNC endorsement. Chaffetz won and is serving for the first time. I wholeheartedly believe Jesse Kelly has such an opportunity, and I am proud to be supporting him in 2010!
Jesse Kelly is not at all the typical politician - he's what we need in congress because he is one of us! "
