JOSEPHINE WHITFORD DUGGAN passed away peacefully on July 21, 2009, in Green Valley at age 100.

Published: Saturday, August 1, 2009 8:46 PM MST

She was born on April 24, 1909, in Mohall, N.D. to George and Charlotte Whitford. Her early years were spent in Spokane, Wash., where she went to high school and then the family moved to Los Angeles, Calif. She graduated from the University of Southern California and was a member of Alpha Chi Omega.

She taught business education at Compton Jr. College in Compton, Calif. and then married Fred Duggan in Lakewood, Ohio, on June 30, 1934. Son Greg was born in 1939 in Charleston, W.Va. and daughter Joan in 1944 in Somerville, N.J.

During Fred’s career with Union Carbide they lived in Charleston, Bennington, Vt., Rocky River, Ohio, and back to Charleston where he retired in 1972. They then moved to Escondido, Calif. for a short time but eventually bought a home and settled in Green Valley for their retirement years. Fred died in March 1996 and Josephine moved to La Joya Assisted Living in October 1999.

Josephine is survived by her daughter Joan Muhr (Bob) of Santa Barbara, Calif.; son Greg Duggan (Joan) of Pinehurst, N.C.; grandchildren Peter Muhr (Rebecca) of Ocean Beach, Calif., Danny Muhr (fianc/e Danelle) of Santa Barbara, Jerry Duggan (Jayna) of Metamora, Ill. and Laura Zaubi (Joe) of Crestwood, Ky. Great-grandchildren include Jocelyn, Jameson and Janelle Duggan and Tyler and Drew Zaubi. No services will be held per her request.

Josephine will be greatly missed by her family and friends at La Joya and St. Francis Church. She connected with people young and old and kept in touch with many by e-mail, which she loved. She always liked learning new things, followed golf and tennis and her USC and Arizona teams, and enjoyed seeing travel pictures taken by her grandchildren.

Glasses of champagne, her favorite, were raised at her two birthday celebrations in April for her 100th birthday - joyous occasions for her. She was a very special lady and we will cherish those happy memories of her always.
