Need public option

Published: Saturday, August 1, 2009 8:45 PM MST

Editor:

With regard to the current debate over health care I suggest that the profit motive, so revered in America, has caused considerable damage to our society; resulting in unnecessary sickness and even deaths.

According to classical economics, without violating government law and regulations, the only social responsibility of a corporation is to maximize profits for its shareholders.

Corporate law creates corporate purpose and that purpose is to operate in the interest of shareholders, to make money and failing this duty, directors and officers can be sued by the shareholders.

No mention is made of responsibility to the public interest. Public interest is limited to obeying the law. Obeying the law is a cost.

Allowing for a few exceptions, private hospitals and health insurance companies strive for profits.

You’re important to them only as a means of profit. We have all read of denied claims, our health costs keep increasing, and management skims millions of dollars in profits.

Oh, and yes, they may even act in the public interest if it will increase or protect profits.

We really need the public health care option.

" Some simple questions Mr. Hosea: Are you glad your mother did not have an abortion? Were you just a 'fetus' or her living baby? Should she have the 'right' to kill you just because you were created inside of her?
Thankfully your mother cared more about you than 'reproductive rights'.... "

" Once again you are condoning people not taking responsibility for their actions. Abortions should only be preformed when there is a health risk, not just when someone forgot to use protection. I once knew someone that had so many abortions her abortionist refused her any more procedures. If you don't want the responsibility of chilldren be responsible enough to prevent them. There are clinics where low cost birth control is available. "

" I don't follow your logic on this. People who oppose abortion as birth control are somehow not "nice"? You are concerned about "diminished liberties"? Wouldn't depriving a baby of its right to live fall into that category?

Wouldn't it be nice if people recognized birth control abortions for what they are? "

" I can only offer you a quote from Blackstone's Commentary on the foundations of law (Ch. 1§III): "In vain may it be urged, that the good of the individual ought to yield to that of the community; for it would be dangerous to allow any private man, or even any public tribunal, to be the judge of this common good, and to decide whether it be expedient or no."

What this has to do with criminal behavior, I can't see. Criminal behavior is a crime against a person, not a "community." "
