GVR pool hours

Published: Tuesday, July 7, 2009 7:16 PM MST

The following comments were posted online in response to Sunday’s story on extending pool hours for children. Online readers are not required to submit and/or verify their names. Screen names are used below.

  • Jan Douherty: “I think anyone whose membership is in good standing should have the right to use any of the GVR facilities at their convenience and for their pleasure. If GVR and its facilities are not age-restricted how do you impose restrictions based on age. Isn’t this age discrimination in reverse? Is this legal?”

  • Mary Anne Downer: “Please do not change the hours at the East Center. It is my favorite and closest to my home. I love my grandchildren, but when children are in the pool splashing and screaming, it is hard for us oldsters to swim.”

  • Jan Jordan: “ I think the decision to add pool hours for children requires a study of the added liability, consideration for the new costs involved (life guard hire, additional maintainance, etc.), impact on lap swimming at the West Center Pool, and impact on GVR dues. All this must be presented to GVR homeowners before and board decision is made. I am one member who doesn’t want my dues to go up so someone’s children have more pool time.”

  • Pete Mundy: “We currently own two GVR memberships. We feel that there are more than adequate hours for children as is. Remember that this is the GVR member pool and we allow the children to use it at specific times. That should be plenty. Most members will avoid the pools when full of kids and then you will REALLY have problems.”

  • Eugene Zavrl: “The pool time is more than adequete for children. Children do interfere with lap swimmers and I have to adjust my time for them. We are not a day care center. If you want a pool for children use the small pools.”

  • Elena: “I hope the hours do get extended! Seniors are not the only ones who reside in Green Valley!”

  • Sarah Barthlon: “Green Valley is a retirement community, not a farrowing pen like Sahuarita. Kids should swim only at West Center and during the current hours.”

  • Claudie Chan: “I use the pools for exercise and relaxation. When family hour begins and youngsters enter the pool, I go home. It’s just not enjoyable for me when kids are screaming and splashing.”

  • Margaret Ann Ching: GRV needs to get its head on straight and drop this assinine idea. Too many visitors, kids and GVR staff already already using the pools. These facilities should be reserved for members only.”

  • Janice Carsoye: “When is GVR going to realize Green Valley is a retirement town. We moved here to get away from kids and their noise. No to more family pool hours. In fact, cut the hours reserved for families now in half.”

" My household is against extending
pool hours for kids. This is a retirement
    community and there are sufficient
hours for children at the pools now. "

" GEEZ! Here we go AGAIN about GVR pool hours! I have lived here for all my life - 50+ years, and this trivial topic gets press all too frequently! From my personal observation the majority of the pools are completely devoid of human life most of the time!! Why don't you keep kiddie hours at the big pools or maybe extend them a little and let everyone swim whenever they want (regardless of age) at the smaller outlying pools? Then, GET OVER IT and GET A LIFE!! G V News - quit beating this dead horse by covering it. We outside of Green Valley DON"T CARE! and most of those in Green Valley don't either!! "

" At the risk of being lynched by my neighbors, I believe that the Abrego South pool should be designated as the official kiddy pool. Since the former GVR Executive Director saw fit to reduce its depth to a maximum of 4'3" (the only GVR pool more shallow than its accompanying hot tub), it has been suitable only for small children, dwarfs and double amputees. Might as well put this example of bureaucratic blockheadedness to some useful purpose. "

" In response to Sarah Barthlon Quote "Farrowing Pen"
I pay GVR dues. Im young, and the young pay YOUR S.S. ( started in 1965 ) check in our Taxes. How insulting you should be ashamed. Is that what you think about all "Children". I pay GVR but sometimes I do not want to use it because of people like you. I would never call you the plant residue of sugar cane after processing! I would never use that word, but I may think it after reading your comments. "

" I cannot believe the selfishness of the Green Valley residents. Apparently they were never children themselves, and don't understand the value of having children surrounding us and enjoying their energy. One thing people should remember is that if the pool hours are extended, the children will not be here 24/7. Right now the pool hours for the children are the worst of the day, the hotest time of the day are for the children, is that fair?
I don't swim, but enjoy relaxing in the pool, but find that the lap swimmers and the pool walkers impede my enjoyment of the pool. "

" GET A LIFE. MOST OF THE PEOPLE COMPLAINING ABOUT A FAMILY POOL DO NOT SWIM IN THE AFTERNOON AT WEST CENTER. I THINK IT IS A GREAT IDEA TO HAVE A FAMILY POOL. AFTER ALL, IF YOU DO NOT LIKE SWIMMING WHEN THERE ARE CHILDREN THERE, 12 OTHER POOLS WILL STILL BE AVAILABLE. i SWIM DAILY AT THE EAST CENTER DURING THE CHILDREEN'S HOURS AND I DO NOT FIND CHILDREN A PROBLEM. MOST OF THE TIME THERE ARE NO CHILDREN IN THE POOLS. AS A MATTER OF FACT, I FIND ADULTS MAKE A LOT MORE PROBLEMS THEN CHILCREN. GVR IS NOT AGE RESTRICTED AND THE PEOPLE WITH CHILDREN PAY THEIR DUES JUST LIKE YOU DO. MAYBE IF THEY CANNOT HAVE THE SAME PRIVLEGES...THEY SHOULD NOT HAVE TO PAY DUES. "

" I live in non-age restricted Green Valley, had to pay a ridiculous transfer fee to join GVR, and pay the ongoing annual fees that go up every year, only to find that my family is not welcome at any rec center. We are met with disdain and hatred, as revealed in the comments about pool hours. Why cann't GVR let non-age restricted homes out of their perpetuity? Then we would have the financial resources to build our own pool in the welcoming, loving environment of our back yard. And, our children will not grow up scarred and afraid of old people. "
