Predictable ignorance
Sometimes it’s disappointing to be right. I was hoping that any commentary about the recent crimes committed in Arivaca by wackos calling themselves Minutemen American Defense would not attempt to connect that group of criminals with the national Minuteman Civil Defense Corps.

Differentiate on MAD
In the interest of fairness I believe that given the horrors of the Arivaca murders perpetrated by the Minutemen American Defense (MAD) that henceforth whenever you publish a letter using the name “Minuteman or Minutemen” in it that you differentiate what group the letter writer is talking about. Otherwise, don’t publish it.

Join the rest of the world
Instead of wasting our energies railing against the suggesting squandering of $1,500,000 to remove the metric signs, perhaps we should be taking another look at switching to the metric system. Some of your readers have even suggested it is “unAmerican” to think metric.

National debt and our vote
Exercising our voting privilege in the 2010 and 2012 upcoming elections is a major political element in voicing our individual freedom from government suppression at all levels.

Pinocchiobama
I see the president as a giant marionette. His two feet seldom on the ground at the same time and his nose growing a bit longer each day. Unlike the original Pinocchio, however, who had but one Geppetto.

Guest Comment: The unique role of judges
Soon after President Obama nominated Judge Sonia Sotomayor to the Supreme Court, news outlets began featuring round-the-clock discussion about the role of the judiciary, judicial activism, and judges’ political views.

From the Editor: Nothing better than ice cream
We always had ice cream in the house when I was growing up. That’s why our “keeping cool” package on Page A1 brings back good memories for me.

Politics and Punditry: Health care reform; Partisan or bipartisan?
All things being equal (which, as we all know, they never are), President Obama would rather, we are told, that the U.S. Senate pass 85 percent of his proposed health care reform with the backing of 70 senators than pass 100 percent of his plan with just 51 or 52 votes.

Give Me a Break: A refreshing spin on cable TV
Few of us had heard of Glenn Beck a few years ago. Now the conservative talk-jock is everywhere. His radio show reaches eight million people. He’s performing live before sold-out crowds on a comedy tour.

Taking a Stand: David vs. Goliath of governmental agencies
One of the most hideous ways the Internal Revenue Service usurps power and control over Americans is through its oppression over nonprofits, especially religious groups.

From the Editor: Jumping in with both feetThere was an ethics exercise we did in my beginning journalism course in college that was so odd it has stuck with me to this day. On Friday, it took on new meaning.

Politics and Punditry: This Speaker is definitely the Master of the HouseDrinking the first cup of coffee in the morning is, for me, no more important than is reading that day’s New York Times. It’s a daily ritual, alternately enjoyable, informative and infuriating.
Along the Way: Memories come fast as buddies silencedWhen your boyhood buddies begin to buy the farm, and the reality of death smacks you up side the head like a shovel coated with ice, you’d like to run away and hide.
HealingHealth Care: Several ways to approach malpracticeAs I said in a previous column, the total direct costs of malpractice is only 1.5 percent of health care costs.
Guest Comment: Confusing world of Medicare AdvantageI turned 65 in July and was inundated by offers of health insurance through various HMOs (Health Maintenance Organizations), PPOs (Preferred Provided Organizations) , and PFFSs (Private Fee-for-Service).

From the Editor: These young Sahuarita chefs are cookin’My wife recently returned from an overseas trip to see her sister, leaving me and the kids at home to fend for ourselves.

The O’Reilly Factor: Fort Hood — terrorism or tragedy? It’s somewhat disconcerting, but the Obama administration continues to dance around the terrorism question. While a new Rasmussen poll shows 60 percent of Americans want the Fort Hood massacre investigated as a terrorist act, the president sees the mass murder as a “tragedy” and a violent crime. He told ABC News, “In a country of 300 million people, there are going to be acts that are inexplicable.”
The Old Scout: How to push through health care reformThere are some things we will never understand. Death, for one. I overheard a woman in the drugstore say, “He went into the hospital yesterday and he was eating his supper and then he fell asleep and then he died. I don’t get it.” She didn’t seem grief-stricken, just uncomprehending. (Why did it have to happen now?)
Healing Health Care: How we can combat spiraling drug costsTo see the difficulty in controlling drug costs, we need to see how the drug industry thinks.
Guest Commentary: Obama has been audacious, yes, but what else? The title of the book authored by Barack Obama is “The Audacity of Hope: Thoughts on Reclaiming the American Dream.” My question is: reclaiming the American dream for whom and by whom?
From the Editor: Varying degrees of comfortThere’s a woman in town who belongs to the Green Valley Samaritans, a group that heads into the desert in search of people who need water and assistance — often illegal immigrants.

School Vote ReactionOnline readers responded to the Nov. 3 election where Sahuarita voters defeated a budget override but OK’d a $27 million bond package for school improvements. Comments appear with screen names left on www.sahuaritasun.com. Writers are not required to leave full names.
Politics and Punditry: Off-year elections do matter, especially psychologicallyRight there on the front page of the Oct. 23 Washington Post, “senior administration officials” attributed the predicted defeat on Election Day — then still a week and a half off — of Virginia Democratic gubernatorial candidate Creigh Deeds to Deeds’ failure to seek and heed advice from the Obama White House.
Healing Health Care: Dealing with health care fraud head-onMassive health care fraud exists due to the ease of accomplishing it, combined with poor oversight.
From the Editor: Say goodbye to a little more historyA bit of Green Valley and American history died last month. But like so many service organizations today, the local chapter of the National Association of Railway Business Women went out slowly, and with a lot of heartache.
Commentary: The opportunity is now for health careAside from war and death, Americans face few issues as immediate as access to health care, particularly during times of economic hardship and its accompanying stress. According to the Census Bureau, more than 47 million Americans under 65 lack health insurance.
Guest Comment: Turning copper mines into landfill sitesThe end of life of a copper mine is not pretty. An exhausted open pit copper mine and the associated tailing piles are unsightly.

Compassionate Conservatism: Funding health care on the backs of the youngAs I was talking recently with the founder of a large American corporation, the conversation turned (inevitably) to health care reform.
The O’Reilly Factor: Visitors to the White House — a fascinating listThe day before Halloween, the White House released a partial list of visitors since Jan. 20 of this year. The list is fascinating and highlights exactly what kind of house the Obamas are running.
From the Editor: Swastikas, flags and talk radioNot long after I arrived here I attended a Holocaust Memorial service at Beth Shalom Temple Center in Green Valley.
Guest Comment: Keep our dollars hereAs a local business owner for the past 13 years, I know the importance of keeping what little revenue exists here, in the Green Valley/ Sahuarita areas in these difficult times.

The Old Scout: As we all learn, life is just a variety packIt costs $722 to fly from St. Paul/Minneapolis to Bismarck, N.D., and you can fly from St. Paul/Minneapolis to Paris for $754. Life is unfair; we all know this. Big prizes go to mediocrities while you struggle on, unappreciated. The righteous suffer while the wicked prosper.
