Burnout operations are completed in the Elk Horn Fire southwest of Green Valley, and some fire crews are being sent home.

The fire in the Baboquivari Peak Wilderness grew to 23,378 acres on Wednesday afternoon and was 60 percent contained.

Remaining firefighters will patrol and mop up on Thursday.

The rugged, steep terrain of the wilderness area, about 30 miles southwest of Green Valley, is popular with hikers and climbers.

The fire was tended by more than 200 firefighters at one point, but no structures or people were in danger.
