From the Editor: The awful truth about Arivaca, and us

Published: Tuesday, June 16, 2009 8:43 PM MST

Who killed Brisenia Flores?

The angel-faced 9-year-old who’d just finished third grade at Sopori School was shot dead May 30 in a fight she had no part of.

The sheriff’s office is pointing at three people so far: Shawna Forde, the unstable, underworld-spy wanna-be; Jason Bush, the alleged triggerman linked to a 1997 murder; and Albert Gaxiola, who has a rap sheet as long as your arm.

Those three are likely headed for trial, but they don’t hold all the blame.

Raul “Junior” Flores, Brisenia’s father, has to carry a large part of it. Authorities say Flores had his head in the drug-trade toilet and wasn’t shy about flashing the financial benefits of his selfishness. They also say that’s what ultimately brought trouble to his doorstep and an early grave for his daughter. And for him.

In the days after the shooting, residents in Arivaca heaped praise on Brisenia, her sister and mom — by all accounts they are good people who made a difference in the small town.

When it came to Junior, most looked at the ground and said nothing. The few who did talk, however, showered him with praise — he was the guy who’d buy you a taco or was quick with a joke. Good guy, that Junior.

But Junior Flores wasn’t a good guy.

And that, in part, is why the people of Arivaca have to take some responsibility for all of this. The so-called “tight-knit community” is a lot more “big city” than it cares to admit.

Who in Arivaca didn’t know Junior was running drugs?

Who called authorities to report him, even anonymously?

Who took his wife aside and begged her to get out for the sake of the children?

Who had the guts to tell Junior it would all catch up with him one day?

I was in Arivaca the day of the murders and several people told me it’s a community that’s different, built on the goodwill and genuine care of its residents. I’ve no doubt much of that is true — their accomplishments are notable.

But a community that cares will push its way beyond superficial relationships and into the lives of people who need to hear tough truths.

A community that cares can’t be bought off with a free lunch and a slap on the back.

Arivaca has some fantastic people who’ve put a firm footing under the community — and many of them likely did step forward in the face of the garbage going on there despite the risks. But a lot of them aren’t much different than the people they left behind in the big city.

  • Arivaca’s tragedy belongs to all of us. What’s going on there is happening a hundredfold in other parts of the state. Here’s one example.

I had a woman call me recently about drug dealing in a hidden part of town.

“What did police say when you called them?” I asked.

    “Oh, I didn’t call them.”

    “How come?”

“My boyfriend told me to just keep quiet. So I did.”

“Do you think it’s OK to just remain quiet?” “I don’t know. He just told me to shut up, so I’m going to. We don’t want no trouble.”

I guess this is where I point out that we’re all headed the way of Arivaca. But the truth is, we’re way beyond that.

    — Dan Shearer

    " Dear Editor,

So you left your safe little Green Valley and came to Arivaca once. On the day of the murders to sensationalize a story for your paper and no one would talk to you. So you slap our little town in the face. You have NO Idea what is happening here and don't really want to know. Stick to soft news you are out of you league.

    " Dear Mr. Editor,
I too agree that it is very tragic that an innocent little girls life was cut short, and I do agree that her father must carry a large part of the blame, however..... do not blame the residents of Arivaca, they have been telling Border Patrol and Police for years and years what has been going on with that family only to hear that they are well aware of what is going on and they are watching them carefully. So perhaps your blame should be re-directed from the town to the Pima County Sheriffs Dept. It's funny how now since a little girl's life has been taken that all of a sudden the Sheriff want's to discuss how awful Arivaca is and how it is a entry for most of the drugs that come in to this country. Well, where have they been at? Why didn't THEY put a stop to it by arresting Junior YEARS ago instead of watching him? His family has not been the innocent, Good-Samaritans of the town, Junior cut down peoples fences so he could ride his quads through the desert to meet up with his smugglers. They have run all the neighbors off, forcing them to move because they didn't enjoy the Flores' celebrations of shooting guns in the air. But that's okay because Junior was right there offering to buy their land. So, before you are so quick to blame a town, do a little investigating yourself. Don't get me wrong, this was tragic and bless that little girls soul, but direct your blame elsewhere. Besides parents, the little girls had GrandParents... where were they? "

" Dan, you asked several questions such as:

"Who called authorities to report him, even anonymously?"

"Who took his wife aside and begged her to get out for the sake of the children?"

"Who had the guts to tell Junior it would all catch up with him one day?"

What makes you think that no one did these things? You did not come right out and say that no one did, but your implication is clear.

You then go on to make such statements as:

"A community that cares can’t be bought off with a free lunch and a slap on the back."

Again, your implication is clear. And again, you are directly insulting those of us that live here. All of us, in fact. The final result of your letter is that one is left with the feeling that you hold a personal grudge against either Arivaca or several people that live here. I'm sure you wanted us to think more deeply about our own personal convictions and the actions we take based on those convictions, but what you modeled fell far short of that mark. "

" What a pathetic OpEd. Blame the entire town for a murder that happened at the hands of people from out-of-town. How dare the Green Valley News lay this on local residents for not reporting SUSPECTED drug activity, when the Green Valley News took no action either. Nor did the Pima County Sheriff's office...nor the Border Patrol. How convenient to be able to publish your trashy opinion and pretend it to be anything other than what the GVN has specialized in for many years...blame Arivaca first. I will never spend a dime on your sad little "newspaper". Your paper needs to be exposed for the fraudulent rag that it is. "

Arivacan wrote on Jun 19, 2009 8:46 AM:

" The awful truth about the Green Valley News...is that it is run by folks who cultivate their misguided opinions of Arivaca while they saunter about on luxurious golf courses in polyester slacks. They then feed their warped views back into to the country club echo chamber via their OpEd pieces, thus perpetuating the cycle all over again. I blame the Green Valley News for Bresinia's death. It was their job to report and investigate the communities they so boldly claim to serve, rather than to cultivate an atmosphere of indifference through relentlessly snide opinion pieces. (I realize blaming the GV News is absurd...just like the GV News blaming the entire town of Arivaca. The difference is that I at least have the good sense to realize it.) "

" The Awful Truth... is that you have hit your mark on Arivaca and every other place in America and we hate to face it. People are, indeed, bought off by a friendly smile, free beer, glad-handing, and so forth. Anyone who tells the truth as they see it are escorted to "the well in the center of town and pushed in backwards".
Citizens long ago stopped thinking and acting with truth and integrity and the results are in: chaos. We have sold our souls and our lives one little lie at a time over many weeks and years.
Where I take issue with your comments is with calling law inforcement. It does no good to call because they are not what we have been taught to believe they are. There is a larger agenda for the border and we can no longer discern the 'good guys from the bad guys". My motto these days is "Assume Nothing". "

Ed Lord wrote on Jun 19, 2009 11:28 AM:

" Was Junior ever convicted of drug traffing or was he just alleged to be a drug trafficer. Your editorial suggested you know for sure he was a drug trafficker. "

Maisie wrote on Jun 19, 2009 12:53 PM:

" So.....why are my comments not published? Is the implication of who the bad guys are too much truth for you?

I wonder why nothing ever changes for the good....

I've lived in Arivaca for a very long time. "

" "Arivacan" could blame you and your propaganda rag and have quite a bit better logic than your article had blaming Arivacans. GV News and Sun has continuously "taken sides" with the fascist Minutemen types that actually shot the little girl. You have consistently told "your followers" that there is big trouble on the border. You have helped instigate and perpetuate this border war on the innocent people who live in border towns. Then you blame them for your Gastapo "War Crimes". If you don't understand the problem, maybe you should hold back on the commentary until you have. Go hang your albatross on someone else's neck! "

" Wow! Condemnation of a whole town for showing emotion over the death of a small child and for sharing about the good her father has done in spite of the fact that he was an alleged grug dealer.
Your naive intolerance, especially coming from someone in a "news organization" is offensive. "

" Dan, this isn't the first time you've written an editoral without knowing your facts. Get to know all the different areas your paper supposedly serves! You're entitled to your opinion - but at least make it an educated one! Junior was what he was. HOWEVER - what about the creeps that murdered his innocent child and him! If these "Minutemen" had let law enfocement do their job. Justice would have eventually been served and this little girt would still be alive. Wise up Dan or stick to your little Green Valley world! "

" Wow. That was one of the most uneducated, biast pieces of garbage I have ever read. For the last few years I have read your paper and never would I have expected this. Was your goal to sell more papers by getting a rise out of everyone? Thats pathetic. I suggest you resign immediately. "

" Dan, you seem to have decided that responsibility is somehow defined by municipal boundaries. Which particular philosophical systems led you to this choice? I can only think of those drawing larger and small circles. "
