Volunteer Recruitment Fair will be held from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. in downtown Tucson between the Rialto Theater and Hotel Congress. More than 60 non-profit organizations and federal national service organizations represented.

Green Valley R/C Flyers meet at 7 p.m. at La Posada’s rec center. Information: Philo Korth, 399-4359.


Arivaca Fire Department will benefit from the proceeds of a Summer Salad Supper, with ham, bread, beverage and dessert plus the salads served from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Arivaca Christian Center, 17085 W. Third St. $8 per person.

June 9

Green Valley Branch No. 77, Fleet Reserve Association, will have a luncheon meeting at 11:30 a.m. at the Cow Palace in Amado. All active duty, reserve and retired personnel and honorably discharged veterans of all pay grades of all services who have some enlisted service in the Navy, Marines or Coast Guard, who live or are visiting in Pima, Cochise and Pinal counties, and their spouses are welcome. Green Valley Forum meets at 10 a.m. at East Center. Mary Ellen Barnes will give an illustrated talk based on her book on the 60-year history of the settlements in the Santa Catalina Mountains. All GVR members and eligible guests welcome.

Arizona Department of Veterans Services will have a benefits counselor at American Legion Post 66, 1560 W. Duval Mine Road, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The counselor will assist veterans and/or their families with VA benefits. Information or appointment: 207-4960.

Smithsonian Institution’s Whipple Observatory on Mount Hopkins will have an open house and star party from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Observing will begin next to the visitors center after 7:45 p.m. with telescopes provided by the Tucson Amateur Astronomy Association and Sonora Astronomical Society. On view: Saturn, double stars, star clusters and a crescent moon. Small flashlights, binoculars useful; bring a lawn chair. Information: 520-670-5707.
