Accident kills DUI suspect in Tucson

Published: Wednesday, June 3, 2009 9:31 AM MST

TUCSON (AP) — Authorities say a car slammed into the back of an Arizona Department of Public Safety cruiser parked on Interstate 10 in Tucson early Wednesday and both cars burst into flames, killing a woman who was under arrest for suspicion of drunken driving.

DPS spokesman Officer Quentin Mehr says an officer stopped the woman at about 1:15 a.m. and eventually arrested her and put her in the back of one of two DPS vehicles at the scene.

That’s when another westbound car drifted into the emergency lane and slammed into the back of the DPS cruiser. Mehr says the officers were able to pull the car’s driver out but couldn’t get the detained woman out. She died at the scene.

" This is a horiffic accident. The police have no business putting anyone, including themselves in this kind of danger. I come from the midwest and the police can not stop you on the highways and this is why. They have to follow you to the nearest exit and have you pull off in a safe place. There is no reason the Arizona police take such drastic action with human lives. This really needs to be addressed by all citizens when you think that could of been you or me on the freeway. I do realized that drunk drivers are dangerous, but following them and getting them off the busy roadways should be mandatory. A citizen that does not drive on the Freeway. I always take the service road. "
