TUCSON (AP) — Authorities say a car slammed into the back of an Arizona Department of Public Safety cruiser parked on Interstate 10 in Tucson early Wednesday and both cars burst into flames, killing a woman who was under arrest for suspicion of drunken driving.
DPS spokesman Officer Quentin Mehr says an officer stopped the woman at about 1:15 a.m. and eventually arrested her and put her in the back of one of two DPS vehicles at the scene.
That’s when another westbound car drifted into the emergency lane and slammed into the back of the DPS cruiser. Mehr says the officers were able to pull the car’s driver out but couldn’t get the detained woman out. She died at the scene.
