Got summer cabin fever? Tired of being inside?

Many Green Valley activities slow down in the summertime but the opportunities never stop at Casa de Esperanza’s Casa Community Center (CCC). On an ongoing basis, the CCC offers “Health and Wellness” programs, games and, of course, the Senior Lunch. There are also many notable special programs hosted at the CCC that you won’t want to miss.

Ongoing Programs

You can’t beat the number of health and wellness opportunities at the CCC:

  • Exercise

  • Swing and Sway

  • Breath Work

  • Meditation

  • Hatha Yoga

  • Blood Pressure Clinic

  • A Course in Miracles

  • Alcoholics Anonymous

  • Weight Watchers

For additional information, call Ellen at 625-2273, Ext. 40.

You can have fun and stretch your mind mornings at the CCC: Pinochle on Tuesdays, Bingo on Wednesdays, cards on Thursdays, and Bingo again on Friday. As a bonus, one Wednesday each month the children from the Los Nino’s del Valle Preschool join in the fun for Intergenerational Bingo!

Call Cynthia at 625-2273, Ext. 14 if you want to join us for lunch ($2 suggested donation for seniors). Lunch is offered Monday through Friday and enrollment is necessary so please call ahead. Come early and join in games and exercise.

    Special Programs

  • A 4-week session of the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) begins in June, offering a wide variety of classes on history, music, art, politics, etc. Contact Penny Schmitt at 626-9039 for more information.

  • On June 8, at 11 a.m., Deborah Totten from Carondelet Hospice and Palliative Care will present information on Advance Directives. As less than 25 percent of adults actually take the simple measures necessary to ensure their wishes are carried out — like completing a health care power of attorney, living will, and possibly Do Not Resuscitate (DNR) forms — this presentation is of extreme importance. There is no charge or registration required to attend the presentation.

  • An 8-week “Caregiver Education and Support Group” starts June 10. Pre-registration for this free course is required. Call Carol Anderson at 243-8352 to enroll. (Note: Adult Day Health Care may be available for your loved one during the class. Contact: Cindy at 625-2273, Ext. 35 for information.)

  • And, looking forward, on July 7 at 1:30 pm, Casa will provide a seminar on preventive health care for stroke victims. The presentation on how to help protect against a future stroke or heart attack is designed for stroke survivors, family members and caregivers. There is no charge for this seminar but pre-registration is necessary. Call Ellen at 625-2273, Ext. 40.

    It Couldn’t Be Easier

Now anyone living in the Green Valley/Sahuarita area can ride to Casa on the Sun Shuttle. The new Green Valley-Sahuarita Sun Shuttle is wheelchair-accessible and stops at the Casa Community Center several times a day. Pick up a route map/schedule, call 792-9222 or visit www.suntran.com for more information.

So, if you are looking for something new and interesting to do this summer, the place to be is the Casa Community Center. Hope to see you here soon!

Bill McCreery is executive director of Casa de Esperanza.
