Green Valley nursery blooms once again

Residents with a green thumb and those who like to tinker with pots and plants felt a loss seven months ago when Les and Suzanne Hayt closed Greenbelt Nursery after 28 years.

As of Friday, Green Valley will be blooming again. Brothers Wayne and Steve Coonts have reopened the two-acre nursery on Del Prado at La Canada.

They were busy unloading a variety of trees and cactus plants along with a load of colorful bedding before opening Friday.

Filling the nursery with color once again are scarlet bougainvillea, bottle brush, dianthus, purple vinca, colorful impatiens, petunias, gardenias, yellow jasmine, variegated pitisporum, oleander and plenty more.

Wayne and Steve have been doing landscaping since 1982, when they were in high school. Just 22 months apart in age, they could pass for twins and have always been close, worked well together and are now taking on a new venture.

“We’ve worked with Les for 20 years. He’s recommended us to many people for landscaping,” Wayne said.

“Now we’ll focus on mostly native plants that will allow people to enjoy their yard for years to come.”

In addition to trees, native plants and cactus, the Coonts brothers will carry bedding plants, pots, soil, brick, slump block, gardening tools and irrigation supplies. Delivery and planting services are also available.

Continuing with tradition, the familiar Greenbelt Nursery name and telephone number remain the same.

Wayne and Steve plan to follow the popular nursery’s tradition where the owners and employees knew virtually everything about every plant — directionality, watering needs, amount of sun and temperature tolerances.

“We have a lot of knowledge and experience especially in low-maintenance plants that will give residents enjoyment for years to come. We want to be here as much as possible,” Wayne said.

“This is a family operation. We’re open for business and we’re ready to serve.”
