“Nil sine magno labore” is Latin for “nothing without hard work,” and the Green Valley Community Coordinating Council has many accomplishments to show for their hard work in recent months. Some of them were outlined at a recent meeting:
Each year the GVCCC compiles and updates all data relating to residents and delivers the data to AT&T for publishing the local telephone directory; they also recently directed and coordinated delivery of the directories to about 27,000 residents in the greater Green Valley area.
“Income from the project accounts for two-thirds of GVCCC’s annual budget allowing us to keep members’ dues very low,” president Stan Riddle said.
Two solar forums were held to provide residents with information about alternate sources of power in an effort to help reduce energy costs. “The solar forums were a new project for the environmental committee and was very well timed; it’s what we try to do, see what the current issues are and address them,” executive director Sandi Richey said.
The recent Household Hazardous Waste event collected and safely disposed of more than 17,000 pounds of paint, batteries, electronic equipment and other hazardous disposables.
The recently launched Dispose-a-Med Program created to allow residents to safely dispose of outdated or unneeded medications at three local fire stations is a successful project and two other drop-off locations are being considered. In the first two months, more than 200 pounds of meds were collected. This program avoids disposing medications into the aquifer possibly contaminating the water supply.
As a co-sponsor of the annual Green Valley Health Fair information on many health issues was available to residents along with free screening and testing.
The results of the GVCCC-sponsored Median Green project, a non-profit organization whose mission is to replant and help beautify public medians along Green Valley’s main thoroughfares is quite visible.
The Traffic and Arroyos committee meets monthly with Pima County Department of Transportation officials to provide them with details of needed street repair and maintenance within Green Valley.
More than working to provide basic services, GVCCC in conjunction with Traffic and Arroyos has successfully facilitated construction in road safety projects including the stop light at Abrego Drive and Continental Road, the rerouting of the West Frontage and Continental Road intersection and the bike subcommittee’s work on the multi-purpose lanes throughout Green Valley.
The committee’s most recent endeavor has been participating in planning for the completion of East Frontage Road to Canoa Road and the Continental Road interchange to improve and ease traffic for vehicles, pedestrians and bicycles.
Various workshops, including tenant, legal and landscaping issues within HOAs are held annually for the benefit of residents and environmental, architectural, and planning and zoning committees have kept up to date with county officials.
