was taken home to her Lord, Easter Sunday, April 12, 2009, in Tucson after a brief illness.
She is survived by nephew Kurt (Valerie) Pourbaix of Westminister, Colo., niece Morgaine Albyon of Rowlett, Texas; and cousins in Chicago.
Her parents; brother Lloyd Clausen; and sisters Dorothy Clausen, Margie Pourbaix and Carta Claussen preceded her in death.
She was the eldest child of Carl and Anna (Ericksen) Clausen, born Nov. 28, 1915, in her grandparents’ farm home near Minden, Neb. Martha was baptized Dec. 10th in Fredericksburg Lutheran Church before leaving with her parents to return to Belden in northern Nebraska.
She was confirmed in St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Naper, Neb. in June 1929. In 1932, she graduated from Naper High School, earned a Teacher’s Certificate at Kearney State Teachers College, taught in rural schools for five years and later in city schools at Wood River and Kearney.
She earned a Bachelor of Arts in Education from the University of Nebraska, Kearney in 1955. An active member of Nebraska Ornithologist Union for many years, she introduced her fourth grade students to Audubon Jr. Club. During the summers, the federal government assigned the groups to band nestling mourning doves.
In 1960, she moved to Illinois near her relatives. Her favorite class was fourth grade which she taught in Arlington Heights and the Demonstration School, National College of Education, Evanston, Ill.
She earned a Master of Arts in Education from Roosevelt University in Chicago in 1962. Later, when a scholarship was awarded from Delta Kappa Gama Society, she studied Library Science and earned a certificate for a position as Teacher Librarian in a Chicago inner city school.
After serving six years, her doctor suggested a change of climate was necessary, therefore she and her mother moved in 1976 to Glendale, Calif. to be near her sisters in Los Angeles. Immediately she was assigned fifth-sixth grade Assistant to the Principal of Zion Lutheran School. Very soon, opportunity offered to serve affirmative action as an Instructor Aide in the Community College Nursing and Learning Center Departments for a few years.
When her mother passed away at the age 92, Martha decided to travel, touring California and Florida; her heritage, Norway and Germany; an Alaska Cruise and Hawaii.
In July 1992, she moved to Green Valley where she could be near her youngest sister. In October, she joined Lutheran Church of the Risen Savior and became a Stephen Minister the following year, serving the church and community. She has been thankful to God, Pastor Stieve and many friends, and members of the church.
The Memorial Service will be at Risen Savior Lutheran Church, 555 S. La Canada, Green Valley on Monday, April 27th at 1:30 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Lutheran Church of the Risen Savior Endowment Fund.
