A wake-up call

Published: Tuesday, March 31, 2009 9:52 PM MST

First things first.

Given your recent article regarding Interstate 19 and the metric system, I am concerned over the priorities of the Green Valley Community Coordinating Council.

The metric system should not be one of its major concerns. Our water supply, and its conservation and further development should be.

And it should not be an issue shunted off to a sub-committee, but rather one that is taken up with the county supervisors each time they meet.

Conservation and further development of our water supply should be the number one issue county supervisors pursue with the state legislature.

And this should be the prime issue which the state pursues with the federal government.

For example, where does the assurance of an adequate water supply for the southwestern states appear in the stimulus package?

Our Founding Fathers believed deeply in the need for a balance of power. It is inherent in our Constitution.

Currently, our water supply is being dealt with by miners and developers the way our financial system has been dealt with in the recent past by some bankers and brokers. No limits.

Like it or not, the socio-economic maladies these imbalances have caused can only be contained through more effective regulation, and in our case, the development of new water resources as well.

Let this be our quest.

Together, for the future, no matter how long it takes, let us work to see our need for water met, when the Santa Cruz is a river once more, and the Colorado flows once again into the Sea of Cortez.
