NewsTalk of the Town: It’s going to the dogs for sure!
Green Valley Village hosted its second Pet Fashion Pawrade last Saturday. It was a zoo of dogs, dog owners and onlookers, all gathered to see the winning canine entries. Proceeds from entry fees go to benefit the Animal League of Green Valley, which also paraded some pretty incredible dogs, all up for adoption. Judges for the Pet Pawrade were Sandi Richey, executive director of the Green Valley Community Coordinating Council; Joyce Finkelstein, past GVCCC executive director; and Yours Truly, from the Green Valley News. Let me just say, all the dogs were winners, but we did have to choose. Winners were: Misty Moon and owner Kiana Beam for “best costume,” Snickers and owner Claudia Sawyer for “best pet smile,” Bailey and owner Jane Rogers for “best pet parent combo,” Minnie and owner Jerry Kokes for “shortest tail,” Remi and owner Linda Ilizaliturri for “longest ears,” Maggi and Jiggs and owners Martha and Leslie Marsden for “pet/parent look-a-like,” and Meg and owner Margie Shiffman for “best hairdo” with Mockie, a Mexican hairless doggie and owner Stewart Milton coming in as runners-up. It’s 28 years old and going strong! The popular Patio Sale, hosted by Valley Presbyterian Church kicks off Thursday for the early birds wishing to get a jump start on the bargains from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is $5 to get in and be first to buy. The event continues Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and again on Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon. Admission is free Friday and Saturday. It is touted as the “biggest and best sale” in Southern Arizona. People come from as far away as Mexico and Phoenix to shop. Food and drink will be for sale, too. For the past 28 years, church volunteers have collected, priced and sold used goods and collectibles, raising money for more than 35 non-profit organizations, including St. Andrew’s Children’s Clinic, Green Valley Assistance Services, the House of Neighborly Service, Crossroads Nogales Mission and educational scholarships, to name a few recipients. Items for sale include small and large appliances, furniture, lamps, clothing, crystal, china, silver (in the boutique), computers, TVs, yard and patio furniture and more. Last year, the sale generated $65,000. Come find a bargain and help charities at the same time. The 98 voices of the Green Valley Community Chorus are in the final days of rehearsing for the 34th annual Spring Concert Monday at 7:30 p.m. and Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. at Valley Presbyterian Church, 2800 Camino del Sol. According to chorus director Marge Spiering, the program called “It’s a Wonderful World” will include four sections: Songs of Praise, Songs of Love, Songs of Soul, and Songs of Peace. There will be musical selections from the “Music Man,” “Alleluja” from Exultate Jubilate by Mozart, “What a Wonderful World,” “Walk in Jerusalem” (an African American Spiritual), “Anthem of Peace,” “Love is a Many-Splendored Thing” and much more. The Men’s Chorus will sing “This Little Light of Mine” and the Women’s Chorus will perform the lively Irish folk song “Colcannon.” Some of Green Valley’s favorite soloists and also some new ones will be performing. Cal Turner will play the clarinet solo for “I Love My Love” Tickets are $8 and are available from all chorus members and at these locations: Chamber of Commerce, Curves, Second Look Books, and Creative Edges (Duval Mine Road near Safeway). Limited tickets for $10 will be available at the door. For info Call Gary LaBarre, 867-8307. rford@gvnews.com
