ObituariesWALTER R. POPPE,
a 24 year resident of Green Valley, entered his heavenly home on Tuesday, March 3,2009. Walter was born to Nicholas and Mathilda Poppe on Jan. 9, 1919, in Lansing, Ill. He was graduated from Illinois Institute of Technology as a mechanical engineer and spent his working career in metal mining and smelting, retiring in 1985. He served in the U.S. Navy Seabees during WWII. Walter was a great lover of the outdoors. He enjoyed gardening and was an avid hiker. He was a charter member of Desert Hills Lutheran Church. Walter is survived by Mina, his loving wife of 65 years; and by daughters Kathi Glasshagel and Sharon (Richard) Hanft. He had four grandchildren: Brian (Jill) Glasshagel, Kevin Glasshagel, Timothy (Cindy) Hanft, and Elizabeth Hanft and fianc/ William Garrett. He also leaves a brother Herbert Poppe; and sister Martha Doversberger; as well as many nephews and nieces. A celebration of Walter’s life is planned for a later date. Remembrances in Walter’s memory may be made to the Green Valley Food Bank or a charity of your choice.
